“One grew up with a very strong sense of the land. One cannot understand Texas or Texans without understanding how strong the tie is to the land. It’s an immense place, as Texans are fond of reminding everyone, with big sky and a lot of open spaces. But while you feel this very real tie to the land, you do also dream of far away places with strange sounding names… New York, Shanghai, London, Paris.”

Dan Rather, from “Is the Media Failing in America?”
Been exploring iTunesU with immense pleasure over the last few months, but the Events recordings from UC Berkeley’s Journalism & Media program are some of the most enjoyable I’ve found — particularly this Q&A with Dan Rather. He sounds like an elderly giant, and is insanely poetic in his reflections. He also comes across as thoughtful, patriotic, discerning, concerned, and optimistic.
