these are the things:
• in retrospect, they always knew she was going to be the fat one. solidly drunk since tuesday, wearing the same clothes, always smiling. she didn’t say a word the entire time. they passed around joint and after joint after joint and ate ice-cream.
• her stomach groaned. she thought about short stories and a storm rolling in. she thought about making somebody a fat housewife someday. she wondered what she’d look like pregnant, standing at the edge of a lawn, hands folded politely below a smooth, round belly. she thought about controlling herself for the rest of her life, she didn’t know what that meant.
• it’s nice to have a french girl in the house in the morning. her liquid “good morning.” her hair.
• a man smoking a cigarette on a bench against the river, lying there, work boots and a knit cap over one eye.
