Stephen Hilyard digitally manipulates underwater landscapes to make them reminiscent of the mountaintops once scaled by his heroes: famous alpinists from the ’70s and ’80s who all died young, while climbing. He took the photographs while diving in Silfra, a (quite famous) fissure off the coast of Iceland. That’s a place for the romantics. Once you are inside the rift, you are quite literally swimming between continents. The water is old by the time it reaches the lake — 50 to 100 years on average — and is drinkable.
